What do I need to know about Wood burning in smoke controlled areas

Contura 210G with log box

Some people believe you cannot burn wood at all in a Smoke Control Area. Whilst burning on an open fire is prohibited, you can still use wood burning stoves, so long as both the appliance and the fuel meets certain criteria.

In Smoke Control Areas, you must use a Defra Clean Air Act exempt appliance and burn only authorised fuels to ensure minimal emissions.

Authorised or ‘smokeless’ fuels - certified to burn without producing significant smoke - include firewood with a moisture content below 20% or with the ‘Ready to Burn’ certification.

Since 2022, wood burning stoves must be Ecodesign compliant, so all new stoves now meet strict UK and EU standards for cleaner burning and lower emissions. Ecodesign stoves are designed to provide the cleanest and most complete burning-cycles using modern combustion technology, ensuring better performance and future-proofing the investment in the home.

All Contura stoves meet Ecodesign regulations and are Defra Clean Air Act exempt, which means they are approved for use in Smoke Control Areas.
